Over het museum
Arbury is said to have begun as a monastery in the twelfth century, which was dissolved in 1536 under Henry VIII. In Elizabeth I's reign it was bought by the lawyer Edmund Anderson, later Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, who rebuilt it in the Elizabethan style. Finding it too far from London, he exchanged it in 1586 with John Newdegate for Harefield Place in Middlesex, and the house has remained with the Newdegate family, later also spelt Newdigate, ever since.
The house owes its present appearance to Sir Roger Newdigate, who inherited the estate in 1734 at the age of 14 and held it for 72 years. After returning from his Grand Tour in 1742 he began planning a rebuilding about six years later, choosing the Gothick rather than the Classical style, perhaps as part of a reaction against strict classicism in the 1740s. His alterations were mostly finished by about 1805, and the house has stayed almost as he left it. The rooms are known for fan-vaulted ceilings with delicate tracery and pendants, a leading example of early Gothic Revival architecture.
The gardens and park were also laid out under Sir Roger in the informal picturesque style, with rolling lawns, winding paths and artificial lakes, and include a rose garden enclosed by an old yew hedge. The estate is still lived in by the family, and the hall and gardens are currently closed for restoration and conservation works.
