Over het museum

Coventry Transport Museum was founded in 1980 as the Museum of British Road Transport. Coventry was long the centre of the British motor industry, and the museum cares for what it describes as the largest publicly owned collection of British road vehicles. The collection includes more than 240 cars and commercial vehicles, about 100 motorcycles and about 200 bicycles, as well as royal limousines of Queen Mary and King George V.

The museum is housed in a building at Millennium Place in the city centre. An £8.5 million redevelopment, funded among others by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the European Regional Development Fund, the Biffa Award and the Garfield Weston Foundation, transformed 12 of its 14 galleries and was completed in 2015. In the same year the Biffa Award Land Speed Record Gallery opened.

The star exhibits are the land speed record cars Thrust2 and ThrustSSC, which the museum calls the world's two fastest cars. The museum also runs a family programme on science, technology, engineering and maths, and its archive department answers enquiries from the public. It is run by Culture Coventry.

Accessible toilets are on the ground floor beside the café and in Gallery 8, and on the first floor in the Transport Technology and Champions galleries.
