Over het museum
Berrington Hall stands near Leominster in Herefordshire. The estate was bought in 1775 by the banker and army contractor Thomas Harley, who commissioned his son-in-law, the architect Henry Holland, to design a new neoclassical house. Construction took place between 1778 and 1781, and Lancelot 'Capability' Brown shaped the setting of lake, woodland and parkland, which was one of his last complete schemes.
The red sandstone exterior contrasts with delicate interiors, including painted ceilings and a staircase hall. The house was later home to the Rodney family and then, from the early twentieth century, to the Cawley family. After the death of the second Lord Cawley it passed to the National Trust in 1957.
Today visitors can see the mansion's historic rooms and the below-stairs areas, stroll through the curved walled garden and the pleasure grounds, and walk in the parkland around the serpentine pool. A natural play area and a den-building area make the estate popular with families.
