Over het museum
The Boys' Brigade heritage museum opened in 2010 within the Belfast Battalion's 13-acre Training & Activity Centre at Ganaway, on the County Down coast overlooking the Irish Sea. Its facade copies the Charlotte Street Mission Hall in Belfast, where the Boys' Brigade began in Ireland in 1888. In 2015 it was named after Maurice Williamson, the long-serving chief executive of the battalion who played a large part in developing Ganaway.
The museum is looked after by volunteer leaders, past and present. It has three galleries, a reference library and a 16-seat cinema. Cabinets cover the formation and work of the Brigade, its sections from the youngest boys to the senior company, bands, camping and expeditions, and the awards of the movement, including the BB Cross for Heroism.
A popular display shows metal and cloth badges from 1926 to the present, with named sets of personal badges and inscribed medals. Other items include a pennant carried to the summit of Mount Everest in 1993 and a damaged wreath saved from the 1987 Remembrance Day bombing at Enniskillen. A hands-on area has quizzes, musical instruments, a Morse code buzzer, a uniform and a model railway.
