Over het museum
The Ulster Folk Museum was created under an act passed in 1958 to preserve a way of rural life that was disappearing as the region industrialised. The museum acquired a site of 136 acres at Cultra, east of Belfast, in 1961, and opened to the public in 1964. Its buildings were collected from across Ireland, taken down and rebuilt on the site.
Visitors walk through four areas called Town, Field, Wood and Hill. The Town has a working forge, a print shop, a post office, a market and court house, a school, churches and a replica pub. Farmhouses, cottier’s houses, mills and a court tomb are spread across the countryside areas, among them the Coalisland Spade Mill with its water wheel. Craft workers show skills such as blacksmithing, basket making, weaving, printing and baking in the daily Meet our Makers programme.
In 1967 the museum joined with the Ulster Transport Museum, whose collection was later moved to Cultra. Both museums are now part of National Museums NI. They share the Cultra estate but are visited separately, and a combined ticket is no longer offered. Several buildings are currently closed for maintenance and conservation.
