Over het museum

Bramall Hall is a black-and-white timber-framed manor house in Bramhall, with parts that date from the 14th century. The manor is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and from the late 14th century the Davenport family owned it for about 500 years and built much of the present house. Sir William Davenport was knighted for his part in the burning of Edinburgh in 1544, and the sixth William Davenport was a Royalist whose house sheltered soldiers in the Civil War.

The Davenports sold the estate in 1877. In 1882 Charles Nevill, who came from a calico-printing family, bought the hall and had it restored and altered in the Victorian style, with new gardens around it. The house was sold again in 1925, and in 1935 it was bought by the local council for the public. The chapel was restored and reopened in 1938, and Stockport Council has owned the hall since local government reorganisation in 1974.

Today the council runs the hall as a museum. Rooms include the Great Hall, the Withdrawing Room and a ballroom with wall paintings of the 16th century, and visitors can also explore the surrounding 70-acre park. The Solar room is currently closed while the roof is being restored.
