Over het museum
The Pankhurst Museum is housed in 60–62 Nelson Street, a pair of semi-detached villas built around 1840. In 1898 Emmeline Pankhurst, recently widowed, rented No. 62 as a home for herself and her four surviving children. On 10 October 1903 she invited friends to a meeting in the house, where they agreed to form the Women's Social and Political Union, later known as the suffragettes. The house served as the union's headquarters for its first few years, and in 1905 Christabel Pankhurst and Annie Kenney set out from it to disrupt a political meeting, which led to the first arrests of the campaign. Emmeline moved to London in 1907.
After the Second World War the surrounding houses were demolished to make room for the growing hospital site, but Nos 60 and 62 survived. They were listed as Grade II* in 1974, and a long campaign stopped a plan to demolish them. A trust took a lease on the building in the early 1980s, after the demolition plans were stopped in 1981, and women were trained in the building trades to renovate it. It opened as the Pankhurst Museum and resource centre on 10 October 1987.
Since 2014 the building has been run by the Pankhurst Trust, which also includes Manchester Women's Aid and offers support to survivors of domestic abuse. The museum is the only place where the public can visit a former home of the Pankhurst family, and its galleries, parlour and garden present the story of the women's fight for the vote. The museum is small and run with the help of volunteers.

The museum is in a listed Georgian-style building. The front door has a low step from the pavement and two steps from the path, without a handrail, but step-free access is possible through the garden door for wheelchair users and pushchairs. The galleries are on the ground floor, but doorways are about 80 cm wide, so some wheelchairs cannot be accommodated, and three steps lead down to the parlour (it may be reached through French doors from the garden, over a slight lip and a gravel path). There are two toilets on the ground floor, one of them accessible, with nappy changing. Registered assistance dogs and assistance dogs in training are welcome; other dogs are not allowed in the museum, shop or garden. The audio-visual display in Gallery Two has flashing images and sound and can be switched off. Grafton Street NCP car park next door has accessible spaces on floor 1 with a lift, and there is a drop-off point at the garden gates.
