Over het museum

The Brecon Mountain Railway runs from Pant, just north of Merthyr Tydfil, into the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. It follows part of the former Brecon & Merthyr Railway, which was established in 1859, opened in 1863 to carry iron, coal and goods through the hills, and closed in 1964 in the Beeching cuts.

The revival was the project of Anthony Hills, who began planning in the late 1970s after a childhood love of steam locomotives. By then the old line had been stripped of its rails, bridge girders and ballast, so the railway was rebuilt almost from scratch. Track between Pant and Pontsticill was laid by 1979, and the first section opened to the public in 1980 with a small locomotive named Sybil. The line was extended to Dolygaer in 1995 and to Torpantau, the summit of the old railway at 1,313 feet, in 2014.

Today the railway has a station with shop, tearooms and workshop viewing area at Pant, a lakeside cafe and adventure playground at Pontsticill, and a 9.5-mile return journey behind steam locomotives. Among them is Loco No. 2, a Baldwin Pacific built in 1930 that was rescued after a crash in South Africa and restored. The railway is still run by the Hills family.

Je bezoek plannen

Goed om te wetenVisitors can break their journey at Pontsticill or Torpantau and return on a later train by telling the guard; this is not possible in peak summer. Guided walks combined with train rides are offered in 2026 with an outside walking company. On many days the workshop where locomotives and carriages are maintained can be viewed from a gallery at Pant. Pushchairs may be used in the stations but are asked to be left in the waiting room during the journey.
