Over het museum
Cambridge Museum of Technology is housed in the former sewage pumping station on the River Cam in Cambridge, a scheduled monument. The station was built in the 1890s to pump the city's sewage to a treatment works, and its steam engines, boilers and later gas engines worked until the 1960s. The museum was founded in 1970 to save the buildings and their machinery and to tell the story of the industries of the city.
The museum is a charity run largely by volunteers. In the Steam Engine Room visitors can see the Hathorn Davey engines, which are steamed on special days, and the Boiler House holds original boilers, including the restored No. 4 boiler added in 1923. The Top Bay displays Cambridge's forgotten industries and has machines operated by push buttons.
The Pye Building shows exhibitions about two local companies, the radio and television maker Pye and the Cambridge Instrument Company, which are known as Cambridge's early high-technology firms. A print room with presses from the 1820s to the late 20th century opens for demonstrations on selected days, and a short ash disposal railway runs on special event days.

The Riverside entrance has step-free access to the ticket office and the pumping station. Some areas of the historic building are narrow or uneven, but threshold ramps have been fitted at small steps and most areas are accessible to most wheelchair users. A rough track leads to the Pye and Cambridge Instrument Company exhibitions and can be difficult for some wheelchair users; the public footpath and staff entrance are an alternative. There are cobbles and uneven floors in places. Gender-neutral accessible toilets are in the Steam Engine Room and the Pye Building, there is seating throughout, and a visual story is available online. Guide dogs are welcome and water bowls are provided. Step-free access to the Engineer's House is currently unavailable.
