Over het museum

Chipchase is first recorded in the 13th century, when it was owned by the de Insula family, who had a chapel, a park and a mill on the estate. In 1348 the estate passed by marriage to the Heron family, who held it for more than 350 years. The castle was the strongest in the North Tyne valley and often held a garrison of fifty horsemen during the wars with Scotland, and the Herons served as hereditary Keepers of Tyndale.

The present house grew around a late medieval and Tudor pele tower. Cuthbert Heron, who died in 1655, built a Jacobean house with a great chamber that is now the music room, and the oak chimney-piece and the staircase with a solid central column date from the early 17th century. The estate was sold in the early 18th century. John Reed of Bellingham bought it in 1734 and added the Palladian doorway, the plaster ceilings and the low Georgian wing that completes the quadrangle. He also built the chapel by the park gates that is still in use.

The castle changed hands several times in the 19th century and was bought by Hugh Taylor in 1862. It has stayed in the Taylor family and its descendants since then and is run today as a private estate. The castle and gardens are opened to the public on a limited number of days each summer, and the grounds are also used for weddings, filming and photography, and fishing.
