Over het museum
Clevedon Court is a manor house built around 1320 by Sir John de Clevedon, laid out in the typical medieval way with a screens passage, a Great Hall, service rooms and a private chapel. Its medieval character has survived through ownership by the de Clevedon, Wake, Digby and Elton families.
Over the centuries the house changed hands through marriage and sale. In the 16th century the Wake family enlarged the windows and added a west wing, and in 1630 it was sold to Sir John Digby, Earl of Bristol. In 1709 Sir Abraham Elton, a Bristol industrialist and merchant, bought the house with its estate, and it has been the home of the Elton family ever since. The National Trust explains that Elton's wealth was linked to the transatlantic slave trade.
The house later became known for its literary connections to the poet Tennyson and the novelist Thackeray. The Elton family passed it to the National Trust in 1961, and it is still opened and managed on the Trust's behalf by the family. The collections include Eltonware, the studio pottery made on the premises by the 8th baronet, a room of Nailsea glass and a group of industrial prints. Behind the house a terraced garden of the 18th century rises up the hillside.
