Over het museum
The Throckmorton family has lived at Coughton since 1409, when John Throckmorton married Eleanor de Spiney and received half of the manor. Thomas Throckmorton bought the other half in 1449. George Throckmorton, a courtier of Henry VIII, began the present house in 1535, although he scaled it back to a moated house with four wings around a courtyard when the family fortunes declined.
The Throckmortons stayed faithful to the Catholic faith and paid heavily for it as recusants under Elizabeth I and James I. The family was linked to the Throckmorton plot of 1583 and to the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, and the wives of the conspirators are said to have waited at Coughton for news. In the 18th century Sir Robert Throckmorton filled in the moat and changed the front of the house, and in the 19th century the family built a Roman Catholic church nearby.
The estate passed to the National Trust in 1946 and was leased back to the family. The Throckmorton family has since resumed management, and the house is no longer part of the National Trust member offer. The gardens, laid out under the family with a rose labyrinth, walled and ladies' gardens and orchards, are part of the visit.
