Over het museum

Hanbury Hall in Worcestershire was built in the early 18th century for Thomas Vernon, a wealthy lawyer from the Court of Chancery in London, as a summer retreat and a setting for his social and political ambitions. The brick house in the restrained Dutch baroque style stands on the site of an earlier hall, and a date of 1701 is shown on the building. Its greatest treasure is the set of wall and ceiling paintings by Sir James Thornhill around the main staircase, showing scenes from Greek mythology and including a satirical political touch.

The formal gardens were designed by George London in 1705 with a sunken parterre and a geometric wilderness. They were swept away in the later 18th century when the park was landscaped to the fashion of the day. In the 1990s the gardens were recreated from the original plans and reopened in 1995. Further features include an orangery, orchards and a walled garden, and about 400 acres of parkland surround the house.

The Vernon family held the estate for generations, helped by marriages to heiresses from wealthy naval families, until the line died out in 1940. The house came to the National Trust and opened to the public after the death of Lady Vernon in 1962. Its rooms display ceramics, including Worcester porcelain, and prints by William Hogarth, who was Thornhill's son-in-law.
