Over het museum
Crofton Pumping Station was built in 1807-9 to lift water to the highest point of the Kennet and Avon Canal, which links London and Bristol. It is a rare survivor of the technology that let British engineers drain mines and supply towns and cities with water. The station was rebuilt and modernised several times during its working life.
One of the two original engines survives. Its 1812 Boulton and Watt beam engine, rebuilt in 1844 as a high-pressure Cornish-type engine, ran until 1958 because water was still needed for farms and railway locomotives even after the canal had fallen derelict. It is the oldest working beam engine in the world that is still in its original location and able to do the job it was installed for.
The Kennet and Avon Canal Trust bought the redundant pumping station in 1968, and by 1971 both engines had been restored to full working order. Volunteers have demonstrated them to the public ever since. The site is run entirely by volunteers, and in 2018 National Lottery Heritage Fund support paid for conservation work and better visitor facilities.
