Over het museum
The museum grew out of the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Group, formed in 1976 to recover wreckage of aircraft from Second World War crash sites in the area. The finds needed a home, and the group opened a small museum in the former pilots' flight hut in 1977. Its first aircraft, a Vampire and a Meteor, were donated later that year.
The hut soon proved too small, and the group leased the derelict control tower of the wartime RAF Dumfries airfield, which had been used as a cattle shelter. The museum moved into the tower and opened there in 1979. Over the following decades it added aircraft and exhibits and extended the rented site. In 2013, after a large fundraising drive, the group bought the land, and further land was added in 2014. The museum became an accredited museum in 2010.
A building programme called the Big Build began in 2015, and volunteers have since put up six new buildings, including a hangar for the Loch Doon Spitfire. That aircraft was recovered from Loch Doon in 1982 and was unveiled to the public in 2018. The museum has always been run entirely by volunteers.
