Over het museum
Dumfries Museum stands on a hill in Dumfries in a windmill tower that was built in 1798. In 1834 the site was bought by the Dumfries and Maxwelltown Astronomical Society, which converted the tower into an observatory finished in 1836. The camera obscura installed at the top of the tower in 1836 is described as the oldest working example in the world.
The main hall of the museum was built in 1862 to house the collections of the newly founded Dumfries and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society. A new gallery, shop, search room and offices were added in 1981, and the outside of the windmill tower was refurbished in 2011.
The museum is the largest museum in the region and is run by Dumfries and Galloway Council as part of DG Culture. Its displays cover the wildlife and early peoples of the area, from fossil footprints and early tools and weapons to early Christian carved stones and everyday objects from Victorian farms, workshops and homes. It also holds a notable photographic archive.
