Over het museum
Dunham Massey has been settled for a very long time. The estate, with its deer park first described in 1362, passed to the Booth family around 1433, and the medieval moated hall on the site was replaced in the early 17th century by a new house built by Sir George Booth. Only the mill from that period survives. The Booths were active in the politics of their age: George Booth, later Baron Delamer, led a failed uprising in 1659 to bring back Charles II, and his son Henry became the 1st Earl of Warrington.
The present house dates from the 18th century, and its story is that of two families, the Booths and the Greys, later Earls of Stamford. Lady Mary Booth, who ran the estate on her own in the 1800s, left a library that still looks much as she knew it. The last owner, Roger Grey, 10th Earl of Stamford, devoted himself to restoring the house and its contents.
In 1976 he gave the estate, the house, the gardens and the collection to the National Trust. The house now holds one of the Trust’s largest collections of furniture, paintings and everyday objects, spanning around 500 years, and shows the stories of the two families and of the people who worked there. The 300-acre estate also includes gardens, a stables building and a herd of fallow deer.
