Over het museum

Arley Hall lies in the Cheshire countryside between Northwich, Knutsford and Warrington. The present hall stands on the site of a first house built by the family in 1469. It was rebuilt between 1832 and 1845 for Rowland Egerton-Warburton to designs by the Nantwich architect George Latham, in Hollington stone, and it overlooks the gardens and landscaped park at the centre of the estate.

The interiors show Latham's Elizabethan-style work: the oak Grand Staircase with strapwork, the library with bookcases made in London in 1843, and richly decorated ceilings and panelling in the Front Hall, Gallery and Small Dining Room. A virginal of 1675 is among the oldest surviving English keyboard instruments, and the Emperor's Room is named after Napoleon III, who slept there in the winter of 1847 to 1848. A Gothic chapel by Anthony Salvin was added to the house in the 1840s and is still used for services. The great dining hall of the earlier house was demolished in 1968.

The gardens, which the family describes as among the finest in Europe, have been created over about 270 years by successive generations. They include eight acres of formal gardens, notably the pleached lime avenue at the entrance, and seven acres of woodland garden with a children's play area. The hall is still the home of the family of Lord Ashbrook, a descendant of Rowland Egerton-Warburton, and is open to visitors on several days each month.
