Over het museum
The collection was assembled by the collector Eric Estorick and his wife Salome from the late 1940s. On their honeymoon in 1947 they came across Umberto Boccioni's Futurist Painting and Sculpture, and they went on to acquire most of the contents of Mario Sironi's studio. Most of the collection was built up between 1953 and 1958, and a selection was shown at the Tate Gallery in London in 1956.
Shortly before his death in 1993 Eric Estorick set up a foundation and gave it his Italian works. The museum opened in 1998 in Northampton Lodge, a Grade II listed Georgian house in Canonbury Square, Islington, which had formerly been the home and office of the architect Basil Spence.
The Estorick Collection describes itself as the only gallery in the country devoted to modern Italian art. Its core is Futurist work, together with figurative art and sculpture from about 1890 to the 1950s, including works by Boccioni, Severini, Carra, Modigliani and Morandi. The house also contains a library, a shop and the Caffe Estorick, and it runs temporary exhibitions, talks and a learning programme.
