Over het museum
Frogmore House was built in 1680–84 by Hugh May, architect to Charles II, for the king's nephew Thomas May. The name comes from the many frogs that lived on the marshy land, which lay on the estates of Great and Little Frogmore. Over the following century the house was occupied by a series of tenants of the Crown.
In 1792 Queen Charlotte, the wife of George III, bought the lease as a country retreat for herself and her unmarried daughters, who enjoyed painting, needlework, reading and botany there. The architect James Wyatt extended the house and linked new pavilions with a colonnade, and the gardens were laid out in the Picturesque style with winding lakes and walks, a Gothic ruin and rare plants. After her death the house passed to Princess Augusta and then to Queen Victoria's mother, the Duchess of Kent, who died there in 1861. Later royal residents included Queen Alexandra, Princess Helena, and George V and Queen Mary, and a restoration in the 1980s recreated the main periods of the house's occupation.
The interiors include Louis Laguerre's murals in the Staircase Hall, decoration painted by Princess Elizabeth in the Cross Gallery and the Britannia Room, arranged by the Duke of Edinburgh. In the gardens stand Queen Victoria's teahouse and, nearby, the royal mausoleums. The Royal Collection Trust now states that Frogmore House is currently closed to visitors.
