Over het museum
Glasgow Science Centre opened to visitors in June 2001, with Queen Elizabeth II performing the formal opening on 5 July 2001. It stands at Pacific Quay on the south bank of the Clyde, on the site of the former Prince's Dock, in an area regenerated since the 1988 Glasgow Garden Festival. The project cost around £75 million, about half of it from the Millennium Commission, and the main building was designed by Building Design Partnership.
The site has three parts. The Science Mall holds hundreds of interactive exhibits on three floors, together with a Science Show Theatre and a planetarium with a 15-metre dome. The IMAX cinema, the first built in Scotland, opened in October 2000 before the rest of the centre. The Glasgow Tower, designed as a freely rotating viewing tower, is currently closed.
Glasgow Science Centre is run as an educational charity. Its exhibition themes include the human body in BodyWorks, optical illusions, energy, water and cargo ships, space and quantum technologies, and it offers programmes for schools and community groups.
