Over het museum

Glasgow Women's Library grew out of Women in Profile, an arts organisation set up in 1987 to make sure women's culture was represented during Glasgow's year as European City of Culture in 1990. The library opened in September 1991 in Garnethill, built from donated books, magazines and papers, and moved to larger premises at 109 Trongate in 1994. It won its first project funding in 2000 and spent several years in temporary premises before moving into its permanent home in 2013.

That home is a Grade B listed Carnegie library on Landressy Street in Bridgeton, which the library now occupies on its own. A renovation costing about £1.8 million created archive and museum stores, learning and event spaces, gallery spaces and a mezzanine, and improved access to the building.

The library describes itself as the only Accredited Museum in the United Kingdom dedicated to women's history, and in 2015 its collection was designated a Recognised Collection of National Significance. The museum collection includes suffragette memorabilia, protest banners, badges, quilts, zines and contemporary artworks, alongside a lending library, the Lesbian Archive and the National Museum of Roller Derby. Two or three exhibitions are usually on show at any time, and the library runs a busy programme of events and learning.
