People's Palace

Over het museum

The People's Palace opened on 22 January 1898 on Glasgow Green, the city's oldest park, as a cultural centre for the East End, which was then one of the most overcrowded parts of Glasgow. It was designed by the city engineer Alexander B. McDonald and was inspired by the People's Palace in London. A glasshouse, the Winter Gardens, stands at the back of the building.

From the 1940s it has served as Glasgow's social history museum, telling the story of ordinary Glaswegians from about 1750 to the present. Its displays include a recreated one-room "single end" home, the communal wash house, the Barrowland Ballroom, Clyde steamers and the campaign desk of the socialist John Maclean.

The Winter Gardens have been closed since 2019, and the museum closed on 14 April 2024 for a redevelopment. Glasgow Life now plans to reopen the building in December 2029, with a new central atrium in the Winter Gardens, a new main reception and shop, and displays shaped by more than 7,000 local residents. The project is costed at £50.86 million.
