Over het museum
The Green Howards Museum is the regimental museum of the Green Howards, an infantry regiment from North Yorkshire with a history of about 300 years. After an early life in a regimental depot, the collection found its permanent home around fifty years ago in the former Holy Trinity Church, which stands in the cobbled market place of Richmond.
The building has been redeveloped twice, in 2014 and in 2019, with support from National Lottery Heritage funding, charitable trusts and private donors. The works created a museum spread over three floors, with permanent displays and space for special exhibitions. The museum is run by the Green Howards Trust, a registered charity.
The collection has grown through collecting, donations and conservation to more than 35,000 objects. Key items include the Victoria Cross awarded to Company Sergeant Major Stanley Hollis for bravery on D-Day, a Crimean coatee, one of the first poppies made to commemorate the fallen, and relics from Hitler's office. The Harrison Medal Room displays more than 4,500 medals awarded to soldiers of the regiment, including 14 Victoria Crosses.
The museum also runs a research service for family historians, an education programme for schools, and online exhibitions about its collection. It received a VisitEngland award for its work.
