Over het museum
Kiplin Hall was built in the early 1620s as a hunting lodge for George Calvert, who served as Secretary of State to James I and later received the charter to found the colony that became Maryland in the United States. The house was owned by four families over almost four centuries: the Calverts until 1722, the Crowes until 1868, the Carpenters until 1904 and the Talbots until 1971.
Each family left its mark. Christopher Crowe, who made his money in Italy, brought many of the Italian items in the collection. In the nineteenth century the Carpenter family added Gothic features, including the library of 1820 with heraldic stained glass. During the Second World War the hall served as officers' quarters and an ammunition store, and the wartime kitchen has been left as it was. The servants' wing was demolished in 1976.
The last owner, Bridget Talbot, fought to save the house from demolition and set up a charitable trust to preserve it for the nation. She left the contents to the trust on her death in 1971, and the trustees still run the hall. Visitors can see furniture, portraits and personal belongings from all four families, then explore the restored walled garden, formal gardens, lake, woodland and parkland. A new visitor centre with a café opened in February 2025.
