Over het museum

The Gwili Railway runs on part of the former line from Carmarthen towards Aberystwyth, built by the Carmarthen and Cardigan Railway and the Manchester and Milford Railway. It carried passengers and goods such as wool, livestock, milk and timber until it was closed in the 1960s. The last milk train ran in 1973.

The Gwili Railway Company was formed in April 1975 and bought about eight miles of trackbed. The first passenger train ran in 1978. Over the following years the line was extended, first to Llwyfan Cerrig and then to Danycoed. A southern extension to the former Abergwili Junction was completed in 2017, and this is now the main starting point for visitors.

Trains run for about four miles through the Gwili valley, with stops at Bronwydd Arms and Llwyfan Cerrig, where there is a miniature railway and a Travelling Post Office. A full round trip takes about 90 minutes. The collection of steam and diesel locomotives and vintage coaches mostly reflects local industrial and wartime railways. Most of the work is done by volunteers, who restore the rolling stock and operate the services, and the railway carries more than 20,000 passengers a year.

The railway is run by volunteers and some areas are not accessible, so visitors with disabilities should contact the railway before booking. The car park at Abergwili Junction has disabled spaces near the ticket office and tearoom; the surface is gravel, and there is currently no pedestrian access to the site. The tearoom has a ramp and some tables reserved for wheelchair users. Wide-access toilets with baby changing are at Abergwili Junction and Llwyfan Cerrig. The diesel multiple unit has a wheelchair space and a boarding ramp, and wheelchair users can travel in the guard’s van of the steam train, which has a portable slope. The Mark 1 carriages have narrow doors and steps, and the dining car is not wheelchair accessible.

The railway describes its train trips as suitable for families, and several experiences welcome all ages. It runs special seasonal events such as Santa steamings and Halloween trains. Buggies and prams can be taken in the guard’s van and ramp area, but there is not enough space for buggies in the dining car. Baby changing is available in the wide-access toilets at Abergwili Junction and Llwyfan Cerrig.
