Over het museum

Weobley Castle is a fortified manor house on the north coast of the Gower peninsula, built in stages mostly between 1304 and 1327 by the de la Bere family, who were stewards to the lords of Gower. It was designed as an elegant family home for entertaining important guests, with a great hall, guest chambers with indoor latrines and a private room for the lord.

The watchtower, battlemented wall-tops and a south-west tower raised to battlement height show that the times were still unsettled, so luxury and defence went together. The castle was seriously damaged during the uprising of Owain Glyndŵr in the early 15th century, although most of the building survived.

Later the manor was held by Sir Rhys ap Thomas. After his grandson was executed for treason in 1531 it passed to the Crown, and it was then sold and leased to tenants until 1911, when it was given to the state. Today it is cared for by Cadw, and an exhibition inside the monument explains its story.
