Over het museum

Ham House was finished in 1610 for Thomas Vavasour, a courtier of James I, as a traditional red-brick house on the south bank of the Thames. It later passed to William Murray, a close friend of Charles I, whose daughter Elizabeth Murray, Countess of Dysart, kept control of the estate through the Civil War and the Protectorate.

The house reached its greatest period after Elizabeth married the Duke of Lauderdale in 1672. He held high office under Charles II, and the couple almost doubled the size of the house, built private apartments for themselves and fine suites for guests, and filled it with paintings, tapestries and furniture of the highest fashion. They also redesigned the gardens and grounds.

Later generations of the family, the Tollemaches, mainly preserved the house and its contents instead of changing them, which is why so much of the 17th-century décor survives in unusually good condition. The last Earl to live at Ham died in 1935, and the house was given to the National Trust in 1948. It was then opened to visitors, restored and studied in detail, and it is a Grade I listed building. Its formal gardens are listed Grade II*. The interiors have also been used often as a location for film and television.
