Over het museum
Syon House stands on the site of Syon Abbey, the only Bridgettine abbey in England, whose foundation stone was laid by Henry V in 1415. After the abbey was dissolved in 1539 the estate came to the Crown, and Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset, began to turn the buildings into a grand private house. In 1594 it passed by marriage to the Percy family, who have owned it ever since and now use it as the London home of the Dukes of Northumberland.
In the 18th century the 1st Duke and Duchess of Northumberland employed Robert Adam to create a series of classical state rooms inside the Tudor shell, while Lancelot Capability Brown replaced the formal grounds with open parkland and lakes. The Great Hall, Ante Room, State Dining Room, Red Drawing Room and Long Gallery are among the rooms Adam shaped, filled with Italian antiquities, portraits and gilded decoration. The 3rd Duke later changed the exterior and built a cast-iron Great Conservatory.
The house was damaged by bombing in 1940. It opened to the public in 1968, when a large garden festival was held in the grounds. Today visitors can see the state rooms, the gardens and the restored Great Conservatory, and the estate also contains a garden centre, a restaurant and an indoor adventure playground.
