Over het museum
Havering Museum tells the history of the London Borough of Havering from prehistory to the present day, and celebrates the achievements of local people. The idea came from a small band of local people, including librarians and historians. In 2008 the project, in partnership with the London Borough of Havering, received a Heritage Lottery grant, and the museum opened in May 2010.
The museum is in the ground floor of the old Romford Brewery building in the centre of Romford. It is completely volunteer led and is an Arts Council England accredited museum. A charity runs it, and the income it earns goes to keeping the museum open.
Visitors enter through reception and the shop, and two permanent galleries explore local history through different themes. Everything is on one level, which makes the showcases and graphics easy to view for everyone. A temporary exhibition room and a learning zone are used by schools, community groups and for regular events and talks.
The museum collects and preserves objects that record the history of the borough and offers school sessions, themed loan boxes, talks and volunteering opportunities.
