Over het museum

Hellens at Much Marcle in Herefordshire is a manor house of Tudor and Jacobean character with medieval roots. The earliest known owner was Earl Harold Godwinson, later King Harold II, before 1066. The manor then passed to the de Balun family, and later owners included the Audleys and the Walwyns, who prepared a room for a visit by Queen Mary Tudor. Over the centuries the house has been linked with figures such as Isolde Mortimer and with events of the Civil War.

In 1943 Malcolm Munthe, son of the Swedish author Axel Munthe, bought the house. In 1981 he set up the Pennington Mellor Munthe Charity Trust, which owns Hellens today. The house contains family portraits and paintings by artists such as Van Dyck and Gainsborough, furniture, a panelled Music Room with a Renaissance frieze, and textiles cared for by volunteers of the Arts Society. Visitors can see the house on guided tours.

The estate also includes formal gardens in Tudor and Jacobean style, an octagonal dovecote, a labyrinth, orchards and wildflower meadows. A converted tithe barn, the Great Barn, is used for concerts, events and weddings, and the Georgian stables offer overnight accommodation. A special exhibit is Hellens - A History in Stitches, a crewelwork embroidery of almost ten metres that tells the story of the house and was stitched by thirteen volunteers over several years.
