Over het museum
Croome Court was rebuilt from the 1750s for George Coventry, 6th Earl of Coventry, who engaged Lancelot "Capability" Brown. The commission was one of Brown's first complete landscapes and his first major work as an architect, and Robert Adam designed interiors from about 1760. The park, with its lake, temples and views to the Malvern Hills, shaped Brown's later career.
In the 20th century the house changed hands several times. During the Second World War it was requisitioned, and the secret RAF Defford radar testing base occupied part of the estate. The house later served as a Catholic special school from 1950 to 1979 and then as a college of the Hare Krishna movement, before more commercial uses left it in poor condition.
The Croome Heritage Trust bought the house in 2007 and the National Trust now cares for it. Visitors see restored rooms, the RAF Defford museum in the former wartime buildings, and the parkland and lake. The nearby walled gardens are privately owned and charge a separate admission.
