Over het museum
Crumlin Road Gaol was designed by Sir Charles Lanyon and built between 1843 and 1845 to replace the old county gaol at Carrickfergus. It received its first prisoners in 1846 and was built on the “separate system”, with each inmate held in an individual cell. Over more than 150 years it held men, women and children, and in the twentieth century it held many political prisoners from different sides of the Troubles. Seventeen prisoners were executed in a chamber inside the walls, the last in 1961.
An underground tunnel runs beneath Crumlin Road and once linked the prison to the courthouse opposite. The gaol closed in 1996 and, after a restoration project, opened to visitors in 2012.
Today visitors explore the building on a self-guided route, with audio, video and projected displays in the cells. The route takes in the tunnel, the holding cells, the circle from which the wings radiate, C-Wing, the condemned man’s cell and the execution cell, the hospital and the graveyard. The building is also used for conferences, weddings, concerts and other events.
