Over het museum
Huddersfield Art Gallery is run by Kirklees Council as part of Kirklees Museums and Galleries. Its permanent collection includes paintings, works on paper and sculpture by artists such as Francis Bacon, L. S. Lowry and Henry Moore, as well as a craft collection that has a focus on Yorkshire ceramics.
For many years the gallery was housed together with the town library in a building on Princess Alexandra Walk, completed in the late 1930s. The gallery closed in 2020 so that the town centre could be redeveloped under the Our Cultural Heart programme. After the closure it used a temporary shop unit in the Piazza Centre, but that space has also closed.
The permanent collection is not on display at present, although the gallery lends works to other regional, national and international institutions. Council plans for the second phase of Our Cultural Heart include refurbishing the former library and gallery building as a new museum and art gallery, but the gallery has not announced a reopening date.
