Over het museum

Jorvik Viking Centre stands on the site of one of the best-known discoveries in British archaeology. Between 1976 and 1981 archaeologists from York Archaeological Trust excavated the houses, workshops and backyards of the Viking-age city of Jorvik at Coppergate. The finds, preserved in waterlogged soil, gave unusual detail about daily life in York about a thousand years ago.

The centre opened in 1984, built directly above the excavation, and quickly became one of the most visited heritage attractions in the country. Its idea was to take visitors in small cars through a reconstruction of a Viking street, with figures, sounds and smells based on the archaeological evidence. The ride was updated in 2001 and again in 2010, when a glass floor showing the original dig was added. Severe flooding in York in December 2015 damaged the centre, and it was fully redesigned and reopened in 2017.

Today a visit has three parts. In Discover Coppergate, projections and displays introduce the excavation. In Experience Coppergate visitors ride in a time car past 22 animatronic characters in a tenth-century street. In Explore Coppergate, real objects from the dig are shown, including metalwork, carved bone, three Viking-age skeletons and a famous fossilised Viking stool sample. The centre is run by York Archaeology, an independent educational charity, and says it has welcomed over 20 million visitors.
