Over het museum
The building that houses York Art Gallery opened in 1879 for the second Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition, an event inspired by the Great Exhibition in London of 1851. It became the City Art Gallery in 1892. The gallery faces Exhibition Square, which was laid out in 1879 as well, with the city walls and York Minster beyond. A statue of the York-born artist William Etty, erected in 1911, stands at the centre of the square, and the gallery holds the largest collection of his work.
The paintings collection spans more than 600 years, from 14th-century Italian panels and 17th-century Dutch works to Victorian narrative pictures and 20th-century works by artists such as L. S. Lowry and David Hockney. The gallery also holds one of the most extensive collections of British studio ceramics, formed through gifts and acquisitions from Dean Milner-White, W. A. Ismay and Henry Rothschild and the long-term loan of Anthony Shaw's collection. These are shown in the Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA).
A major redevelopment reopened on 1 August 2015. It created about 60 per cent more display space, new first-floor galleries, new lifts, a larger cafe and shops, a collection store, and a new entrance leading to the Museum Gardens at the rear. The project cost about 8 million pounds. Today York Art Gallery is run by the charity York Museums Trust and shows temporary exhibitions alongside its permanent displays.
