Over het museum
Lamport Hall grew from a Tudor manor house and is best known for its classical front, designed by John Webb in the mid-seventeenth century. The house was later altered by the architects Smith of Warwick and William Burn. For more than 400 years it was the home of the Isham family, and its rooms, including the High Room of 1655 and an eighteenth-century library, hold furniture, books, china and paintings collected by the family. Many pieces were bought during the 3rd Baronet's Grand Tour of Europe in the 1670s.
The twentieth century was hard on the hall. Over the years it was a family home, flats, a hunting box, a country club, the home of the Northamptonshire Records Office, a British and Czech army base and a prisoner of war camp for Italians. Poor maintenance led to an outbreak of dry rot, and in the 1970s large parts of the house were gutted. When Sir Gyles Isham, the 12th Baronet, died in 1976, he left the hall, its contents and the estate to the Lamport Hall Preservation Trust, which has carried on the long restoration. The trust's education programmes won the Sandford Award in 2017.
The gardens have kept their layout since they were first made. Sir Charles Isham built a remarkable rockery from 1847, and around 1874 it was populated with gnomes, which are described as the world's first garden gnomes; one survivor can be seen inside the hall. Today the gardens have herbaceous borders, a woodland garden with snowdrops and a walled garden replanted in 2010 with tall perennials inspired by Piet Oudolf. Visitors can also see the Bryan Holden Working Horse Collection and a museum of rural life run by the Hannington Vintage Tractor Club.

The ground floor of the hall can be reached by wheelchair via the garden door (ask staff on arrival); the first floor is not accessible, mobility scooters are not suitable inside the hall, and there is no loan wheelchair. The gardens are open to wheelchairs and scooters, but the gravel paths are deep in places and the woodland walk can be muddy, so a companion is recommended. The car park is a short distance from the hall, and the area in front of the hall can be used as a drop-off point. An accessible toilet is in the toilet block at the front of the hall. There is respite seating in the hall and gardens, and a large print guide of the hall is free; there is no induction loop and no braille guide. Recognised guide, assistance and service dogs, including those in training, are welcome in the hall and gardens.
