Over het museum
The museum occupies Armley Mills, a mill complex between the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, about two miles from the centre of Leeds. Cloth fulling mills have stood on the site since the 16th century. In the early 19th century Benjamin Gott rebuilt the mill on fireproof principles after a fire, and the surviving Grade II* listed building was once the largest woollen mill in the world. It stopped working commercially in 1969.
Leeds City Council took over the site, and it reopened as a museum of industrial heritage in 1982. It is now part of Leeds Museums and Galleries and tells the story of the industries that made Leeds, from wool and cloth to engineering, clothing, printing and film.
The Textile Gallery keeps machines in the atmosphere of a mill around 1900, including two huge spinning mules from 1871 and 1904. The Tailoring Galleries explain how Leeds firms such as Burton's came to clothe much of Britain, with a recreated 1950s Burton's shop. The Powerhouse gallery holds steam engines, including the 1871 mill engine that powered Armley Mills, and the Media in the Mill gallery presents early cameras, projectors, printing equipment and a link to Louis Le Prince, who filmed some of the earliest moving pictures in Leeds. The Palace Picture House, a 26-seat cinema, is one of the smallest in the north of England. The grounds include the Colour Garden, planted with dye plants and run by volunteers.
