Over het museum
The manor of Newsam appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. In 1155 the estate was granted to the Knights Templar, who built a preceptory there and gave the place its name. After the Templars were suppressed in 1307 the land passed through several owners, and around 1520 Lord Darcy built a large new courtyard house. After Darcy's execution in 1537 Henry VIII seized the estate, and in 1545 Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, the father of James I of England, was born in the house.
In 1622 the businessman Sir Arthur Ingram bought Temple Newsam and rebuilt large parts of it in the 1630s, giving the house the U-shaped form it has today. His family owned it for about 300 years. Later generations added the Picture Gallery and the stables, and in 1762 Lancelot Capability Brown was employed to reshape the park. Lady Hertford created several of the interiors in the 1820s, including the Chinese Drawing Room.
The City of Leeds bought the estate in 1923 and developed the largely empty house as a country house museum. Its collection of fine and decorative art is regarded as internationally significant, and its furniture collection is considered one of the best in Britain outside the Victoria and Albert Museum. Today Temple Newsam is run by Leeds Museums and Galleries and also includes gardens, a lake, parkland and Home Farm, a working rare breeds farm.

A large proportion of the house is accessible and a lift takes one wheelchair at a time, but there is no wheelchair access to the south wing or the cellars, and mobility scooters are not allowed in the house. A manual wheelchair can be borrowed at the house entrance, and manual and motorised wheelchairs and scooters can be borrowed for outdoor use in the park (free, donations welcome). The grounds and walled gardens are fully accessible, although paths are steep in parts and gravel or cobbles in Home Farm and the stables courtyard can be hard to push on. The first floor displays at Home Farm are not accessible. Accessible toilets are in the house and the stables courtyard, and a Changing Places toilet is next to the accessible playground. An audio tour enhancement is available for visitors with hearing difficulties. Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas. Extra activities run in the Leeds school holidays. Pushchairs cannot be taken around the house, and the uneven surfaces at Home Farm can make a buggy ride bumpy; hip carriers can be borrowed. Baby changing is in the stable courtyard toilets and the ground floor toilet in the house, which is toddler friendly. The tea rooms have a children's menu and high chairs.
