Over het museum

The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway opened in 1898 as a narrow-gauge line crossing the hills and valleys of North Devon between Barnstaple and the coastal town of Lynton. It had distinctive locomotives and carriages built to high standards, but it closed in 1935, and most of the original rolling stock was broken up when the line shut.

Today the railway is being rebuilt step by step by the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Trust, an educational charity with more than 3,000 members, and is run day to day by a subsidiary company largely with volunteers. The revived section starts at Woody Bay Station on Exmoor, said to be the highest railway station in southern England, and runs along the original route above the Heddon Valley to Killington Lane Halt. Passengers travel in restored heritage carriages behind a narrow-gauge steam locomotive on a two-mile round trip that takes about 20 to 25 minutes.

The railway reports that it is the longest-closed section of railway line in the world to have been reopened solely through volunteer effort, and it uses the site as a living classroom on the transport of the past and its effect on rural life on Exmoor. There are currently five rebuilt heritage carriages, and the Trust has submitted a planning application to extend services to Parracombe. Trains do not run to Lynton or Barnstaple at present.

At Woody Bay there is a level gravel car park with level access to the platform, and Blue Badge bays beside the platform on normal operating days.
