Over het museum
The West Somerset Railway was promoted by local businessmen from 1856, with a Brunel assistant, James Burke, planning the route over the Quantock Hills. It linked Watchet and the Bristol and Exeter Railway at Taunton, and was extended to Minehead in 1874 by a nominally separate company. Minehead grew as a seaside resort, and the station reached its present length of just under a quarter of a mile in the 1930s. In the 1960s Butlins built a holiday centre in the town, but the branch lost money outside the summer, and the line was closed at the start of January 1971.
Because closure had taken a long time, plans to keep the line open as a private railway were already under way. After more than five years of negotiation, trains began running again at Easter 1976 between Minehead and Blue Anchor, and by 1979 services covered the full 20 miles between Minehead and Bishops Lydeard. The early years brought money and reliability problems, and the planned link to Taunton was lost when the track was removed. The company refocused on tourism and leisure and, from the mid-1980s, more suitable steam engines helped passenger numbers to rise.
Today the railway carries over 200,000 passengers a year and relies on about 50 paid staff and 900 volunteers. Trains run daily from early April to early October and on selected dates in the other months, calling at ten stations. Work to restore lost infrastructure continues, including the full passing loop at Williton.

Most stations are accessible, but Doniford Halt has uneven gravel access and no parking. Bishops Lydeard has ramps to the platform, and Crowcombe Heathfield, Watchet, Dunster and Minehead have level access. Accessible toilets (RADAR key) are at Bishops Lydeard and Minehead, and loan wheelchairs are kept at Bishops Lydeard, Watchet and Minehead. Standard trains have an accessible carriage next to the guard's van with space for four wheelchair users and a companion. Wheelchairs and scooters up to 700 mm wide, 1,200 mm long and 230 kg can be carried, and the narrow connecting doors of heritage carriages stop wheelchair users moving between carriages. Diesel units have less space. Assistance dogs are welcome, and passengers who need a carer can reserve a free carer ticket.
