Over het museum

Manchester Art Gallery grew out of the Royal Manchester Institution, a society formed in 1823 for the promotion of the arts. Its neoclassical building on Mosley Street, designed by Sir Charles Barry and built between 1824 and 1835, is listed as Grade I. In 1882 the building and its collections passed to Manchester Corporation, which turned it into a public art gallery. Barry also designed the neighbouring Athenaeum on Princess Street, built in 1837 and listed as Grade II*, which is now part of the gallery.

The gallery closed in 1998 for a major refurbishment and extension and reopened in 2002 after a project costing about £35 million. Hopkins Architects designed the new building that links the two historic buildings, giving the gallery a large glass atrium. The extension was controversial when it opened.

The collection includes about 25,000 works of fine and decorative art. It is particularly strong in Victorian art, with major Pre-Raphaelite paintings such as The Light of the World by William Holman Hunt, and also holds work by L. S. Lowry and a fashion collection with couture pieces. Manchester Art Gallery is run by Manchester City Galleries, part of Manchester City Council, and a charitable trust raises a large share of its funding. Entry is free, and the gallery offers family spaces such as the Lion's Den, regular tours and a programme for early years.
