Over het museum
The National Football Museum was developed in the 1990s and first opened in 2001 at Preston North End's Deepdale ground. Funding problems led to its closure to the public in 2010. It reopened in 2012 in Manchester, in the distinctive glass Urbis building in the Medieval Quarter, supported by Manchester City Council, the European Regional Development Fund and the National Heritage Lottery Fund.
The museum cares for what it describes as the largest collection of football objects and archives in the world. More than 40,000 items are held in its Resource Centre in Preston, and around 2,500 are on display in Manchester at any one time. The galleries tell the story of the game, from the first football association and the creation of the FA Cup to the national teams and popular culture, and include interactive games for visitors.
In 2019 the museum relaunched its English Football Hall of Fame, set up in 2002, with a commitment to equal representation of women. In 2022 it opened an exhibition on the history of women's football, and since November 2022 it has been funded by Arts Council England as a national portfolio organisation. It is an independent charity, and thanks to support from Manchester City Council, residents of the City of Manchester and city schools can visit free of charge.
