Over het museum
Mendips is a 1950s semi-detached house at 251 Menlove Avenue in the Woolton area of Liverpool. In 1946, after his parents separated, John Lennon came to live here with his Aunt Mimi and her husband George Smith. Mimi kept the house immaculately tidy and gave John a stable home, and he remembered his childhood here as mostly happy, although it was marked by the death of his mother Julia in a road accident in 1958.
John and Paul McCartney, who joined John's group the Quarrymen in 1957, spent hours at Mendips learning songs, and Mimi sent the band's rehearsals out to the front porch because of the noise. Mimi sometimes invited fans for tea but had to lock the kitchen door to stop them taking crockery as souvenirs. She left Mendips in 1965 and the house was sold. In 2002 John's widow Yoko Ono bought it and gave it to the National Trust so that it could be cared for and visited.
Today Mendips is shown as it was when John lived here, with the neat and cosy rooms of a 1950s family home. It is visited on a guided tour that also includes Paul McCartney's home at 20 Forthlin Road. As a mark of respect, the National Trust closes Mendips each year on John's birthday and on the anniversary of his death.
