Over het museum
Sudley House was built in 1821 for the Liverpool corn merchant Nicholas Robinson, on land bought from the Tarleton family. Both families had links to the transatlantic slave trade. After the death of Robinson’s children, the house was sold in 1882 to the shipowner and merchant George Holt, who moved in with his wife and daughter in 1884 and altered and furnished it to his own taste.
George Holt was a serious collector. He bought English landscapes and genre scenes, prints and Chinese porcelain, and later added works by leading painters of his time. His only daughter, Emma, lived in the house until the Second World War and died in 1944. In her will she left the house, its estate and her father’s paintings to the city of Liverpool as an art gallery for the public.
In 1946 the city sold the remaining contents and turned part of the ground floor into a temporary library. Since the 1990s the ground-floor rooms have been brought back towards their Victorian appearance, with furniture of a similar style because the original pieces were lost. Sudley became part of National Museums Liverpool in 1986, and it is described as the only surviving Victorian merchant art collection in Britain that still hangs in its original setting.
