Over het museum

The Middlesbrough Collection was begun by the town's local authorities and was looked after by Middlesbrough Art Gallery, the Cleveland Gallery and the Cleveland Craft Centre. Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art was founded in 2004 to bring this collection together in a new building and it opened to the public in 2007. It stands in Centre Square in the middle of the town and is part of Teesside University.

The collection now has more than 2,350 works of art and craft by British and international artists from the mid-19th century to the present. Its main strengths are British painting made after the Second World War, contemporary American drawing, British ceramics of the 20th century, contemporary European jewellery and international installation art of the 21st century. A changing selection is always on display.

Alongside the collection the museum commissions new work and shows a programme of changing exhibitions, learning projects and community work across the Tees Valley. It is known in the region and beyond by its short name MIMA, and entry to its exhibitions is free.
