Over het museum

Monk's House is a small 17th-century weatherboarded cottage in the Sussex village of Rodmell, about three miles south of Lewes. The writer Virginia Woolf and her husband, the political activist and editor Leonard Woolf, bought it at auction on 1 July 1919 for 700 pounds. Over the years they added a hot water range, a bathroom and a two-storey extension in 1929, and in 1928 they bought a neighbouring field to protect the views from the garden towards Mount Caburn.

The house became an important meeting place for the Bloomsbury Group. Visitors included T. S. Eliot, E. M. Forster, Roger Fry and Lytton Strachey, and Virginia's sister, the artist Vanessa Bell, lived nearby at Charleston Farmhouse. Virginia wrote many of her novels in a small wooden lodge at the bottom of the garden, among them Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, Orlando and The Waves. The Woolfs lived at Rodmell full time from 1940, after their London flat was damaged in an air raid.

Virginia Woolf died in 1941, and Leonard continued to live at Monk's House until his death in 1969. The house then passed to a friend, was sold to the University of Sussex in 1972, and came to the National Trust in 1980. Visitors can see the ground floor rooms, including the sitting room, dining room, kitchen and Virginia's bedroom, the writing lodge and the cottage garden that Leonard created, with its orchard, ponds and views over the Sussex Downs.

Rodmell is about 4 miles south of Lewes and 5 miles north of Newhaven on the C7. The house postcode is not suitable for satnav because it often leads onto the A26 and an impassable railway crossing; follow the directions from the A27 or A259 given on the National Trust page.
