Over het museum
Perth Art Gallery stands on George Street in a building from 1824, one of the oldest purpose-built museum buildings in the United Kingdom. It was put up for the Literary and Antiquarian Society of Perth as a library and museum and honours Thomas Hay Marshall, a former provost of the city. In 1915 the society gave the building to the city on condition that it was only ever used as a library or museum.
A large extension was added in the 1930s to house major gifts of paintings and the natural history collections of a local society. It was opened in 1935 and is the main part of the gallery that visitors see today. For many years the building was known as Perth Museum and Art Gallery. When the new Perth Museum opened in the former City Hall in 2024, the George Street building became Perth Art Gallery.
The gallery holds one of the oldest public art collections in the United Kingdom. Its permanent displays include Modern Scots, with work by artists such as Joan Eardley, William MacTaggart, Alison Watt and Calum Colvin, and a display on the Scottish Colourist J.D. Fergusson and his partner, the dancer Margaret Morris. A collection of works and belongings of John Everett Millais and his wife Effie, who came from Perth, is shown on long-term loan. The gallery is run by the charitable trust Culture Perth and Kinross.
