Over het museum
Perth Museum opened on 30 March 2024 in the former Perth City Hall, an Edwardian building from 1911 beside St John's Kirk. The site had been a burial ground, a market and a bowling green before the first City Hall was built there in the 18th century. The present hall hosted political meetings, concerts and dances for almost a hundred years, and it closed as an events venue when Perth Concert Hall opened in 2005.
After standing empty for over a decade, the building was converted into a museum from 2019 to a design by Mecanoo, with funding from Perth and Kinross Council and the UK Government through the Tay Cities Deal. It took over many objects from the former Perth Museum and Art Gallery in George Street, which became Perth Art Gallery.
The museum presents the story of Perth and Kinross as part of the story of Scotland over about 10,000 years. Its collections include Neolithic stone balls, Pictish stones and the Bronze Age Carpow Logboat. The centrepiece is the Stone of Destiny, also known as the Stone of Scone, the ancient inauguration stone of Scottish kings that is still used in British coronations. It returned to Perthshire after about 700 years and is shown in a short immersive experience. The museum is run by Culture Perth and Kinross and was shortlisted for the Art Fund Museum of the Year Award 2025.
