Over het museum
Plas Newydd in Llangollen is best known as the home of Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, two Irish women who left Ireland in 1778 to make a new life together in Wales. They moved into the small stone cottage in 1780 and lived there for the next fifty years. Their way of life caught the imagination of Regency society, and visitors such as Wordsworth, Sir Walter Scott and the Duke of Wellington came to see them.
Over the years the two women turned the cottage into a Gothic fantasy, adding stained glass and elaborately carved oak, much of it taken from churches that were being rebuilt. They also laid out gardens with rustic bridges, an archway and a riverside walk. After Eleanor Butler died in 1829 and Sarah Ponsonby in 1831, the house changed hands several times. A later owner, General John Yorke, added the black-and-white timber exterior and filled the rooms with objects from around the world.
Llangollen Urban District Council bought the house in 1932, and it is now run as a museum by Denbighshire County Council. Inside, an exhibition in the former dressing room tells the story of the Ladies and shows some of their possessions, and the panelled rooms, library and dining room can be seen. The gardens, which cover about ten acres, are free to enter every day, and the tearooms serve food from April to October.
